Why do some cancers evade the immune system
while others remain vulnerable to immune attack?

As an international and translational research group based at the Department of Biomedicine in Basel, Switzerland, we investigate how tumors shape immune responses and how effective anti-tumor immunity can be restored. By integrating basic, translational, and clinical research, we aim to advance the next generation of cancer immunotherapies.

The immune system has a remarkable capacity to recognize and eliminate malignant cells. Yet many cancers successfully evade immune control, and even the most effective immunotherapies fail to benefit a substantial proportion of patients. Understanding why anti-tumor immunity succeeds in some patients but fails in others remains one of the central challenges in modern oncology.

Our research focuses on uncovering the mechanisms that drive immune dysfunction within tumors and on understanding how anti-cancer therapies reshape the tumor microenvironment. Through the combination of advanced experimental models, patient-derived samples, and clinical studies, we seek to translate biological insights into more effective and durable therapies for patients with cancer.
